Preliminary Remarks On How Translations Are A Rare Resource In The Universal Chatter. And Why Translation Matters.

While globalisation made the world a small and highly integrated place, the number of books translated decreased, and oddly enough, even translations from the dominating lingua franca, English, got fewer. Why this happened, is hardly analyzed so far and poorly understood. In the wider debate of cultural diversity in the age of globalisation, the translation of books is a particularly critical case, as books are not only loaded with symbolic value, but are the traditional format and medium for highly complex and solidified knowledge for today's digital knowledge society. This essay is based on a substantial amount of empirical data and related insights and perspectives. Here. sellschaft Wissensgesellschaft

European Publishing Market Watch (2004)

The European Commission, DG Enterprise, had commissioned an umbrella stuy on the European publishing markets. The primary outcome of the Publishing Market Market Watch was the identification of the main issues affecting the publishing industries' competitiveness and ability to modernise and innovate at a time of enormous change in the technical, commercial and social environments within which publishing operates.

The participants in this proposal, a Finnish business school with extensive analytical experience and capacity in this area and a UK-based specialist media consultancy, contributing a combination of economic, technical and business analysis to the task of understanding and reporting on the European publishing industries during this extraordinary period of transition. We were proud to have broadly contributed to this study, specifically covering all issues related to diversity.

The project produced sectoral reports, covering:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Books
  • Directories

and a summary report, all available online and free of charge here.

The objectives of the European Publishing Market Watch are:
1. Increasing the knowledge and understanding of the European Commission about the publishing industry
2. Informing future policy formulation within the European Commission with respect to publishing
3. Improving knowledge and understanding of competitiveness issues in European publishing among a wider constituency, particularly within the publishing industry itself
